The Hase Pino doesn't compare to any traditional tandem, for a start it's back to front with the stoker in a seated position on the front, with all of the controls happening from behind.

Both riders get a forward view, but it doesn't feel scary being on the front any traffic coming towards you is on the other side of the road.

The Pino is incredibly sociable as your heads are close together and you can talk really easily.

The Pino Steps is fitted with Shimano's mid-drive system E6100 which makes hill climbing so much more fun, tempted? Come and try one.

Cruising for two people - along the sides of rivers and canals.

I'm thinking of buying one. Firstly our combined ages are 136 and I'm a lot older than Kim. We regret that we messed around finding a new cycle for Kim who is less than 40kg and less than 1.5m tall. We finished up with a pricey new small adult/child's bike. Kim struggled with gear changing so we sold it at a huge loss. We then drove round in circles looking at and riding new and older Tandems. We failed to realise the obvious. Kim would see nothing from the back seat. Happenchance took us to the far North and one evening we diverted to 'jdtandems'. I expected to put my nose to a window and just look at a Pino or two, however Ruth and John were still at work. Fortuitously they were delayed by customers who required help from John. Ruth immediately saw what we failed to appreciate and loaned us their Pino so that Kim could experience gear free cycling from a recumbent 'deck chair' seat, and, without having to face my hindquarters. We ordered ours there and then. John assembled it's many bits and popped it in the post to Cornwall. 48hrs later the Pino was in Brittany France on the first of its holidays. If one person is a slower rider a Pino is the answer. If one person is more confident on busy roads Pino's score again. Two pairs of eyes are great for observation of signage, wildlife and hazards. The only drawback for Kim stems from her insistence on lightweight clothing, she gets soaked in heavy rain, being in front she keeps my knees dry. We wasted a lot of our time on other options. Now that I'm a creaking gate I'm thinking of going North again to get an electrically assisted Pino that slides to a reduced length. An E-Pino will fit on our small car tow ball and we can go even further for our trips. We've had to leave our Pino in strong sunlight many times and this 'cooked' the hydraulic oil in the brakes. We've had to spray everything with water to unlock the wheels. Bleeding the brake oil properly was tricky, pricey and increasingly necessary so I phoned Ruth from Brittany and John or Jamie made up two traditional cable systems for me. I received them in Brittany within three days. I've no idea how hot the parts got in the sun but I couldn't touch the levers without gloves. The new cable brakes require more effort to stop quickly but it's still just a one index finger job. Sharp hydraulic stops were possible with my little fingers. Hase have upgraded their brake systems. I once made a terrible series of gear changes that damaged my rear gear cable so that we had a ball of wires on the end of the left hand grip. A three minute conversation with Ruth late one afternoon had the problem sorted and then Jamie excelled by posting the bits that day. Twenty-seven gears are better than three, even on French riverside towpaths. I wonder what jdtandems will give us in part exchange. You may see our unassisted Pino in their workshop being serviced before sale. Oh! If you're in your mid seventies treat yourself to a good saddle, I didn't. Next time ...
