Our tandems are fitted with flat pedals on the front, on the rear we also fit strapless toe clips which are useful to stop your feet coming off the pedals. If you use Shimano SPD's we have plenty available just bring your cycling shoes. If you use anything else it would be wise to bring them along.

Absolutely, all the control and balance is the responsibility of the front rider.
Do we both have to pedal at the same time?
On most tandem yes, it is very unusual to need independent pedalling, but we do have tandems that allow that to happen.
My partner is a lot fitter than me, how does this affect riding a tandem?
It doesn't, that's the beauty of tandem riding. For example if you have a rider who normally averages 20 mph and the other rider normally averages 10 mph, then the chances are as a combined team you'll be riding at 15 mph.
