Exciting Times at JD Tandems - Made in Britain

Here at JD Tandems we have been working on some new projects and collaborations.

We have a new British frame manufacturer. They make frames for several small British cycle manufacturers, one of which produces a brand of bicycle called Cotic, that John, co-owner of our business rides. They have a high tech and very modern approach to frame building enabling them to build a sophisticated and precise frame.

The tandem frame they have built us is a premium product, and we have selected premium equipment to go with it. Price for the complete tandem from about £14,000 to £15,000.

This new tandem is electric assist, it's fitted with the latest generation of Bosch motors, which gives upto 100Nm of torque. The motor is fitted at the stokers bottom bracket, and this keeps the front and rear riders pedals in sync. The frame is made of cromoly steel, with a combination of T45 tubing and Reynolds 853. It is also fitted with 3 S&S couplings in front of the front seat tube, allowing the front end to come off in a matter of minutes. Ideal for train travel or for putting in or on the back of a car.

We are fitting Sram wireless 12 speed gearing, which means there are no gear cables to uncouple when splitting the frame. The wheels are 48 hole and there is an option of tubeless compatible rims and the hubs are thru axle. The frame will accommodate a big range of tyre sizes upto 50c with full mudguards.

This tandem is designed as the ultimate touring e-tandem, and has the option of twin battery mounts, as standard it comes with 1 x 800wh battery, but it can take 2 of these, giving a huge mileage range. We estimate that on average 1600wh will give 160 miles of riding without needing a recharge.

The frame is of course pannier rack compatible but so is the fork, so it's suitable to take panniers front and rear. It's equipped with 4 sets of bottle cage bosses, all of which are usable even when running 2 x 800wh batteries. We like to see 3 brakes on an ultimate touring tandem such as this, and we are fitting Hope hydraulic Tech4 V4's with vented rotors, 203mm on the front and a massive 220mm on the rear. In addition there is a V brake on the back just to be belt and braces.

We are going to be holding stock of these frames in small, medium and large and there will be the opportunity to order a different size to our standard sizes but the lead time will be at least 6 months. We have a test ride model available now, just get in touch if you'd like any more information.
